Chapter 12

For the first time, I devoted my undivided attention to planning our wedding. Deciding on napkins and table covers bored me to tears, but seeing the excitement in Lara’s eyes made the whole undertaking worthwhile.

The only part of the wedding I was particularly concerned about was having her there. As long as Lara and I were together at the altar, I could take or leave the rest, but the longer I spent working on it with her, the more I realized it mattered to her.

We wolfed down a lamb roast that the kitchen had whipped up as a taste test for the reception and like most meals coming out of the Caldwell kitchens, it was spectacular. It met even Lara’s exacting standards, which meant one less problem to worry about.

Lara crossed the wedding menu off the list as we headed to our bedroom. She scanned down the rest of the items.

I stole a look over her shoulder, right as she was turning the page only to reveal another almost full page of dot points.

“That thing has multiple pages?” I blurted.

Lara looked at me and raised an eyebrow.

“There are a lot of moving parts, Seth. Weddings don’t just plan themselves. Some people spend a year planning their weddings.”

I shook my head in disbelief. Thanks to my curse, time had always been a treasured commodity. The notion that people would devote that much of their life to a day was something I struggled to fathom.

“Isn’t this what we have Millicent for?” I asked.

Lara scoffed. “She was your father’s choice.”

That would be about right. My father wouldn’t trust just anyone to plan a function at the manor.

“She has thrown galas, balls, and state dinners. There should be precious little she needs us for apart from our preferences.”

“If only,” Lara muttered. “It seems for everything I give her, she gives me three chores back.”

That didn’t sound right, but Millicent was a tough old bird on the best of days. She listened to my father’s every instruction, but that was Frank. No one gave chores back to Frank Caldwell. If Lara wasn’t getting the same response out of her, it was likely due to the staff’s perception of my father and my priorities.

I mentally etched Millicent’s name into the top of my priorities list.

“Not anymore,” I replied. “I’ll see her first thing in the morning and iron things out. I imagine we’ll find her much more cooperative.”

Lara let out a sigh of relief. “That would be wonderful. I feel like she’s fighting me the whole way.”

“If I promise to get her on board, can we take the rest of the night off? I’m wrecked.”

“If you can wrangle Millicent into line, I think we can arrange that.”

“Done. I’ll tackle her first thing in the morning.” I pushed open the door to our room and held it for Lara. “I could really use some rest.”

As I pushed the door closed, my phone played a message alert.

I lifted it out of my pocket, wondering who it could be.
